1) Yes! Linux is more than happy with any flash media formatted to FAT32 and with a little tweak NTFS too !
2) Windows programs are just that! ( some can be made to run, but it can be a pain!!)
Ubuntu comes preinstalled with just about all you need, if not installing extras with Add/remove or the Package Manager is a piece of cake !
Tell me what you want you need, and I'll tell you where to find it or how to get it !

First question..how can I transfer my FF bookmarks from my windows lappy to this Ubuntu lappy? I've put my bookmarks folder on the Ubuntu desktop, then opened FF and tried ->File->Import but that doesn't work 'cos it says that "no programs that contain bookmarks can be found" I must say tho' that Ubuntu sure is purty!!!

To transfer FF bookmarks you will need the FF addon Foxmarks...I think it's now called Xmarks. Install it on all your pcs and it will sync all your passwords and bookmarks....Sweet !! Not sure but there may even be a version for IE.

There is a version of Xmarks for IE. Password sync is optional, but after I started using that, bookmarks and password sync between my lappy and comp has been painless.

Okey dokey, I've installed the Xmarks addon, but I still can't figure out how to transfer all of my FF bookmarks from windows to this Ubuntu lappy! edit.... had a think and I'm assuming that it has to be on each lappy! Is that right?

1) Xmarks has to be installed on all machines. 2) Open Xmarks on the machine with all your bookmarks (right click the icon) 3) click on Xmarks settings 4) Click Run setup wizard 5) Answer all questions and sync starting with the bookmarks on the pc. 6) Repeat on other machines, but sync with the server instead.
Once all is set, it will sync every few mins, add a bookmark to one pc, and it will be waiting for you on the others = V COOL !!
If you ever need to reinstall Windows, Linux or whatever, getting your bookmarks back is a piece of cake !! Just install Xmarks and sync with the server !

Do what Ade said. The syncing will happen automatically from the second time on.

Try this, 1) Click on Applications (top left) 2) select Add/Remove 3) Change the Show: box to All Available Applications 4) scroll down to Ubuntu Restricted Extras and tick the box 5) Click Apply Changes
As for PP files try open office Presentation which is found at ...... Applications / Office

Applications / Office Ade, it won't allow me to tick the restricted area box.It says " "This application conflicts with other installed software. To install 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' the conflicting software must be removed first. Switch to the 'synaptic' package manager to resolve this conflict." What's that about?

I see you have a problem there. Go to System>Administration>Synaptics Package Manager Once you are there, you will see button called Mark All Upgrades. Click that. It will load. Then, next to the upgrades button, you will see a button called Apply. Click no that, and hopefully your problem will be sorted.
