This is going to sound a weird question, and it doesn't seem to make sense, but here goes. My wife uses her laptop at home to access her Outlook email account for work. It is on a different server to home. She cant get emails in or out for Outlook. The error message comes up after she goes through numerous tests. Basically it says the server for her work is at fault. She was out in town today and checked her Outlook email on her iphone. It received all her works emails. She came home and tried it on her laptop and no emails in or out. She then tried it on her iphone (at home) and no emails in or out, yet it was working whilst she was in town? I am getting emails in and out on Outlook, but obviously its to a different server. Baffled? I bloody am! If its working in town it should be working at home, but its not. Would you agree that the problem must be with my wife's works server?

Axevictim I've never had an online smartphone but surely if emails are "downloaded" on one you don't expect to download them again on a laptop?

Could be the firewall on the home router? Im assuming she logs onto the router and isn't using 3G at home?

nah its not the firewall. The error messages ( one for each email account) she is getting back is- 'Receiving reported error (0x80042108) Outlook cannot connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message contact your administrator or Internet Service Provider. Yet she checks her Yahoo account at home and is able to send and receive email.
Left home and went to her work. Checked her Outlook account on her iphone and the emails come in? Yet it doesn't happen at home?

It looks like a server set up issue, the mobile provider and ISP not set right. It should send ok through the routers wifi but 3G needs the providers server set to send through that,
My phone receives mail ok using the SMTP.talktalk.net server and will send using pop.talktalk.net when using my router. BUT connected through 3G not the wifi I need to set the outgoing SMTP to smtp.o2.co.uk as o2is my mobile provider. Like they say above, is it wifi or 3G when it works,

Ok so just for the hell of it she lugs her laptop into her work. Changes the password for her works Wifi and hey presto her emails come in. So....it looks like the wifi at home? Yet she is able to get on the internet at home, so how the hell can she not get her emails if she can get them at work? Its a Netgear DG834GT router.

If she gets Hotmails (outlook) over 3G in town she must get them at home using 3G

First of all many thanks to all who have replied. I greatly appreciate any input as I'm f*cked if I know what the hell is wrong? This has caused no end of rows between us, over who is at fault. As usual it is all my fault....it's either my router or ISP!! Mind you I get blamed for everything in life.
Anne: She is running Windows 7, the same as me. Nob: The problem only seems to affect Outlook. She can take her laptop to work, key in the wifi password and gets her emails. She can use her iphone at work and get her Outlook emails using her works wifi and also 3G. She comes home, tries to pick up her Outlook emails and it's no go. Error messages come back'Receiving reported error (0x80042108) Outlook cannot connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message contact your administrator or Internet Service Provider. Yet at home she can get Yahoo emails, internet access..in fact everything else? I have taken down my Firewall-no go. I have taken off the router Firewall-no go.I have checked all her email account setting and it seems fine. Groan..... I will personally send my undying thanks to any bright spark who can stop my wife nipping my bloody ear off.....pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze!
