Jeez Peter you're once again calling me Scottish?!?! How many times does your fuzzled old brain need shaking? Gus when one gets to my age one finds reprogramming a fuzzled brain is not as easy as it used to be so mine still assumes everyone unfortunate enough to christened Angus comes from Scotland.

So..this afternoon I've been setting up my pal All Weather's new Dell netbook for him! All Weather had a laptop until about a year ago, until he finally realised that he would never get the hang of computers and consequently gave his lappy to his daughter! However... he recently saw my new Nettie and was very impressed. He decided to have another crack at it and sent his daughter to buy him one. It's a little Dell Inspiron mini running xp home. I told him that I'd set it up for him, put some security on it etc and set up his desktop with quick links to google etc! What's he do...yep he pissed about with it himself...... Au naturelle..... I get the 'HELP' call a few hours later. He's convinced that he's already broken (not exactly his expression) it! Anyway..it's all 'sorted' and cooking on gas now. It's a nice little machine allright, it's the one I considered myself except that the battery life is only 3hrs tops. Comparing it to my Acer though, it's clear that I made the right choice.Plus mine was a tenner cheaper! So..It's plain that All Weather has completely forgotten the little that he'd previously learned, so when he comes to collect it, I'll need to give him some basic tuition! I've put a few movies, music vids etc on it for him. They should keep him happy for a while! Good deed for easter accomplished, street cred restored!

For the first time in yonks,my wife and I "took in a movie" It was "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D. Last time I say a film in 3D was at Epcot way way back. This film today was so realistic, and we were lots of times ducking and diving as things came at us from the screen.Wow

Hi All ! To ratae: I've got the same as your pal - a Dell Mini Inspiron, for travelling purposes! It was from Dell's "refurbished" outlet, £160. It's not my main PC, but it's great for 'on the road'. I put Avira on it, and they get along fine ! Just a tip for your mate: Chrome works brilliantly on it, while IE8 is like sludge! . If any other pals want one, tell them to have a look at Dell's "refurbished" site - there are always good deals. I use Skype a lot and there's a built-in webcam and microphone - good sound without a headset. It didn't come with loads of 'bloatware' and I've put a lot of stuff on it and still have loads of free HDD space. I've been very happy with it and the keyboard is very comfortable for such a small netbook. I love it very much !

Ellie...I've put Firefox on the machine, 'cos if I talk to my mate about 'Browsers'...He thinks I'm waffling on about animals that munch on bushes and trees! I've also put the latest version of AVG free on it and told him not to mess with it! It came with 30 days free Norton security suite installed. But when I saw the Nag pop ups mentioning paying for it, I knew that my mate would panic so I removed the Norton completely! It did also come with 'Student office suite' or summat. I dumped that and just put powerpoint on the machine for him. I put media player classic on it and set that as his default video player, and set it to always open full screen. WMP 9 is left for his music. That should keep him happy for a while anyway! Like I said..It's a nice piece of kit, but my Acer is nicer!

Hi ratae ! I liked the "browser" joke ! I think you could call what IE does, "grazing"! In other words, it's a very slow activity ! All the Dell Minis come with 30-day trial Norton; I disposed of it rapidly and installed Avira. I have AVG 9 (Free) on my HP laptop (that's my "main man"!) Why does AVG come in for so much flak ? Because of all I hear about Avast, I tempted to change to that, but I've had no problems with AVG. I tried Avira on the HP laptop, but after 3 successful scans, it stuck and wouldn't complete a scan, so I went back to AVG. Yet Avira is great for the XP Dell netbook. On the CA Forums ('scuse my French!), Avast is God! In its previous form, it had a sort-of CCTV image - I saw it on a friend's laptop. What I reckoned was, "It's a boys' toy" ! So why do you think that AVG has lost popularity/credibility? You must have some faith in it as you put it on your mate's netbook. Fletch doesn't rate it, based on a recent post in the Security Forum over at t'other place! Incidentally, I didn't choose AVG for the netbook, because Windows Security Center on my HP Vista laptop used to keep telling me that my AV was OFF, which it wasn't! At that time, I didn't have the confidence to choose, "I have an AV program which I'll monitor myself". Sorry to ramble on, but I'm in deepest S. Wales and it's p***ing it down! Your considered opinion on AVG v. Avast v. Avira v. MSE would be very welcome ! Ooooh - it's stopped raining ! I might go out and graze... or browse !

The only time Avira paused scanning was when I had a dual boot and I was asking it to check S.V.I area.Them clowns over at CA forum keep telling noobs about Avast-why I dont know,as it is nowhere near as effective as Avira ot MSE.

Ellie...prior to using Avast, I used AVG myself. The only reason that I swapped, was because both the 'update and scan times' took ages. I don't know about the latest version tho'!
I don't use the auto update on Avast..I update daily at my own convenience. It doesn't take long anyway!
I put AVG on my pals machine simply 'cos I can't rely on him to re-register Avast when it prompts him too!
I'm afraid that he's only marginally less stupid than poor old Smudger!
(I might be a little harsh on my pal there!)
