I see you have a problem there. Go to System>Administration>Synaptics Package Manager Once you are there, you will see button called Mark All Upgrades. Click that. It will load. Then, next to the upgrades button, you will see a button called Apply. Click no that, and hopefully your problem will be sorted. Ok guys...I've sorted out the ppt stuff and that's working fine now.But.....I've followed the instructions re 'mark all upgrades' and that's now done, however, I'm still getting the message telling me that I can't tick the restricted area box for the same reason as previously! Anything else for me to try lads?

Paste this in the terminal
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Or try this
Open synaptic package manager, and type ubuntu restricted extras and tick the box. It will tell you if you need to remove any packages.

Forget the terminal. Try synaptic. If you want terminal, go here
Application> Accessories

The "Terminal" is like Windows "Command Prompt". It's the quickest way to get things done in Linux. There are alternatives though, if you want a slightly more Windows like experience, you can use a GUI to update your system.......
1) Click on System ( 3rd one in on top left) 2) Hover the cursor over Administration to expand the options 3) Click on Update Manager 4) Click on Check 5) Enter the password you login with 6) Click on Install Updates when the available updates are revealed
If at some point you want/need to use the terminal. It is accessed by .... Applications - Accessories - Terminal
If you want to, you can drag the icon to the Desktop or the Top Panel (Taskbar)

I'm getting into a mess now fellas. Dunno what I've done, but when I I try to run 'update manager' and try to install the updates, I get error message "E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report."
I have no idea what this message means or what to do about it!!!

This may fix it.......
1) find and open the Terminal 2) Type or Copy & paste the following and press ENTER
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Enter your password when prompted (This may not show in the terminal, but it is read by the system !)
3) Enter the following commands one at a time.....
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Let me know how it pans out

Looks like apt-get (aptitude) is either missing or corrupt ! As the latest version of Ubuntu comes out tomorrow, your best bet is to start from scratch with the new one! How much RAM does your lappy have ? ( sorry if I've asked before) If it's less than 512 you might be better off with Xubuntu www.xubuntu.org/As with all versions, 9.04 is out tomorrow !

As a rule, you can just upgrade in the background! But if the updater isn't working.......you're screwed....can you use the Update manager ?

Okey dokey...the bottom line is that sod all worked.Clearly I screwed something up! So...I've wiped the drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 8.1 and I also installed all of the updates! I've now started installing the upgrade to v 9.04 which seems to be taking ages! Tomorrow (if I have time) I'll have another try at finding some drivers or whatever that will allow the VLC media player to play my wmp/avi videos!
