Me too and very impressed. Thanks for introducing me to the Forum.
When you discover how to add a spell check to the Mail program I would be very interested to know how.
Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the squatters I think the answer is to install another email program, after switching to the full version of linpus ! or a different version of linux altogether. As for myself, I have the AA1 with 120GB disk, so I,m gonna partition it and have a couple of versions installed side by side. If you're interested there are a couple of useful guides here....... The full version of Linpus www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=4310How to install Ubuntu, www.aspireoneuser.com/2008/08/14/acer-aspire-one-ubuntu-netbook/If you have a look at some of the Linux vids on youtube, You'll soon see that there is something for everyone !! ENJOY

Looks like we both have the same one with 1GB memory.
Thanks for the info. It's a whole new ball game. I think I will take it slowly. I won't get any thanks if I mess the whole thing up for the sake of a spellcheck.. Great pity there is no DVD/CD on it.

If you really need a spellcheck for your emails, you can always email direct from the document writer.

That's a good idea. That is probably the best simple solution. I will have to wait until she gets a little more competent before introducing that, she is not at all computer literate. I read the post on your second link and there was a lot of disagreement about whether or not to install a new operating system and loose quite of the built in features of the Acer Aspire One.

I know what you mean about the loss of Acer features. However....what people seem to be missing, is that you gain the features of the new system. It won't take much to get the webcam, sound and wifi up and running again. And when you consider the size of the harddrive, there is plenty of room to have more than one system available. The Ubuntu installer has a built in partition tool, so I will end up with the best of both worlds, The simple, easy to use Acer version, and the fuller featured Ubuntu option.
For me, the beauty of Linux, is that you can do whatever YOU want with it. And if you don't like it.....you can do (or have) something else, totally FREE OF CHARGE !!!

I am going to buy another one for two children to share (they went absolutely wild when they saw the one I have) as a Christmas present. Do you think the 500 Mb is fast enough considering that the 1GB is only fifty quid more?.
I was very impressed by the way it picked up pictures off a memory stick and the clarity of reproduction.

£50 more for the 1GB ??
Where I shop, the difference is just over a tenner....Unless you mean the one with the 8 GB solid state harddrive and 512 MB RAM.
Anyhow....The smaller ones are more than up to the job of running Linpus Lite ( even the full version) The thing to remember is that, the one we have is capable of running XP, and has even been known to pull Vista Home Basic!.
My ultimate goal is to one day install a copy of Microsoft Workstation 2008 alongside Ubuntu Linux. In the meantime though, I'm very pleased with Linpus.....It's just so damn simple !!

Tesco prices
£198.00 for the 500 Mb and £249.00 for the 1GB which I have. Are there more competitive prices?

Tesco prices are very good for the AA1, I was lucky enouge to get a trade deal on mine though Otherwise I'd have gone there too ! There are more models than Tesco stock. 512 RAM x 8GB SDD 1024 RAM x 8GB SDD 512 RAM x 120GB HDD 1024 RAM x 120GB HDD And then you have the XP versions. You could also consider one of the ASUS EEEPC models. There's more mini laptops than you can shake a stick at Long may it continue !!

I thought it was an excellent buy and would imagine they will fly off the shelves before Xmas. The Asus Eee does not look anything like such good value for what you get.

I'm not so sure, you can get the Asus with a 20GB solid state drive. The SSD version of the One only has 8. The 120GB version which you and I have is the winner though Anyhow: I now have the original Linpus system on a 10GB partition, and the rest of the drive is occupied by Ubuntu. You wouldn't believe the number of hoops to jump through, in order to get the wireless working I'm now going to treat myself to a well deserved Paracetamol
